In order to speed up the game, I was thinking of using more dice--Like 5 attack dice and 4 defense dice.

Would this work? Anyone ever play it this way? I have people telling me this would ruin the game. I only think it would speed things up because we usually play with 4-5 people and the games take around 3 hours each.

Any response it much appreciated.

I would say, if you want to shorten the game, change the rules or targets. For example use mission cards, castle versions, capitals, etc. so people can get to their goals quicker.

The dice probabilities are very carefully set and any variations can easily lead to new exploitative strategies.

Personally I have never heard anyone play this way. If you have, can you tell us how the game progressed. Did anyone use new strategies? Was the game any different?

I use the following house rules:

Attacker with 11+ armies rolls 4 dice
Attacker with 26+ armies rolls 5 dice
Defender with 10+ armies rolls 3 dice
Defender with 25+ armies rolls 4 dice

This speeds up mega-battles as there can be up to 4 casualties per turn. It is also more realistic to reflect the advantage of a large vs. small army (for example, if there are 35 units attacking 5, then it makes sense that the attacker should roll 5 dice and the defender only 2.)

Just don't forget that the number of potential casualties per roll equals the number of dice used by the player with the FEWEST dice. So attacking with 5 dice against 2, only two total units can die. The attacker simply throws out his lowest 3 dice and the highest 2 play.

Try it and see how it works for you.

Nice strategy man. I think practice makes the man perfect. If you play it again and again you will be the winner one day.

My friends and I play a (somewhat) complicated version we made up that often uses D8's instead of sixes, for various reasons... It can make things exciting to change up the dice sometimes. In any case, if You have some friends that don't mind trying something different, try it out and work out the kinks till you have a system that fits your needs. That is how brilliance is born.

In long-term battles, the odds of 3v2, 4v3 and 5v4 are roughly similar.  I believe 4v3 is the best odds for the attacker, I worked it out a long time ago, can't recall exactly now.

At my site www.artofwar.cc we have various Eras that have different battle rules.  The Classic++ Era allows for 3v2, 4v3 and 5v4 battles, depending on how many defenders are on the target territory.  You're welcome to come play and see how it goes for you.
