Subject: I have an Over-Expansion problem, can someone help me fix it?

In 2 player games it is like
essential
to over expand.

Very true, it is essential to work the game in your favor aggressively in a two player game. But, in a 3 or more player game you have a lot of hurdles to jump inorder to get there. The last hurdle is a 3-player situation. So the question is, how do you get to the final two with out weakening yourself too much and give yourself the best chance to win?

Yes, the answer is specific to the situation and we can find them in the other threads. I think a few of the other posts have addressed this situation.
I think what I would like to have for mind is a clear set of maxims, rules or bullet points that I can refer to in these general situations. Such as: Whenever you are in a three man game, always eliminate one player unless you may weaken yourself too much in hte process; whever in a three man game, keep the balance of power unless you have a change to eliminate the strongest player . . . things like that.
General ideas always need to be tailored to the specific circumstance, but I wonder what are those general rules?
