Hello,everyone.it's time for me to talk about Risk again.This is my first time that I wrote an article at the diplomatic board.

Negotiation is actually the art of communication between the people.If you can "seize your opponents' mind",induce him to listen to you,then your negotiation will be surely the successful one.Now it's time to talk about the main content.

What should I pay attention when I negotiate with the others?

Firstly,you must talk to him politely,try to be polite and calm.Don't use "threatening diplomacy" if not in desperate.Otherwise,your opponents will probably ignore you and even have the hostile attitude towards you.

Also,to get your opponents have any deal with you,you must talk about "his benefit"(This is very important!).Don't forget that everyone just concern what they gain and lost themselves.So don't just talk about your deal with him or "your benefit" .Otherwise,you would hardly persuade your opponents to hear your suggestion of making treaty or organizing alliance.

If I want to ally or setting treaty with the other powers,how to persuade them?

Just tell them the benefit of the deal:Concentrating more force on less front.Then they will be easily persuaded by you even without the good speech.

If someone ignore my attempt of negotiation,what should I do?

That's easy,if you can't negotiate with someone who ignore you.Then just "shift" your objection to the other players,then you can easily bond up with them.Remember,"international diplomacy" is not only the diplomacy between the two countries!But can be between many countries.

=== Example ===

"Shifting objection of diplomacy" ever happened in the history.At the eve of the complete unification of Italy in 1866,the Italian Kingdom want to support Austria to against Prussia initially.But the condition is Austria must cede Venetia.Austria simpily refused,so Italy turned to negotiate with Prussia,and then allied together to against Austria.Finally Italy lost severely to Austria,but Prussia defeated Austria.And Italy was even able to gained Venetia!It was won by "diplomacy" instead of "military"!

If the superpower appear,how do I persuade the weak power to ally with me to against that extremely strong empire?

More easy one.Just tell these weak countries that if they don't bond together with you and struggle continually with you,they will be doomed.If you're in more dangerous situation,you can even say,'If I fall,you will be the second!"(I think you haven't forgotten the story in Zizhi Tongjian,right?)

If you're threatened by the strong power,what should you do?

Do you remember what I have said before?"Delay" is one of the ways to solve such threat,telling him that you're "considering" such offer while you find the new ally to support you.

The second method to counter him is "turning his head away",I mean you may try to persuade him to focus on other objection instead of you.this will prove to be the most effective method,but also hardly to execute successfully.

=== Example ===

When Hitler brought Germany to the strong power,the Western countries include France and England "secretly negotiated with Hitler" and tried to maintain the friendly relations with him instead of against him.They thought that such act will cause Hitler to turn against Soviet Union,then they will be relieved.This diplomatic strategy is called "Transfering Shock Wave".

How to terminate my alliance or treaty with the others?

Before you set up your deal with the other opponent,you should tell him both of yours can't attack each other until one of them declaring war before a turn.If you forget it,then just don't attack him in the "declaraing war's turn' except you're in desperated time.

Should I trust my ally completely?

The answer is obviously not except they're extremely trustful.You should fortify enough troops to defend the border connecting with your ally only.If you don't place enough garrison,that will be too contempt to invade your terrtories for them.

However,just don't express or display your untrust to your ally except he backstab you,that will surely have the negative effect.

If my ally backstab me and then want to reestablish our alliance,what should I do?

I tell you,I ever met such situation.These shameless players will try to rebuild the alliance with you even they backstab you.To counter such move,don't blame them!Instead,try to show that you don't mind and still "faithful and loyal" to him,then he will probably decrease his alert to you.Remember,increasing your aware to this "backstabbing guy' since he is no longer trustful.

When you're able to recover from the "backstab" and he really trust you're "faithful" to him,then it's time to avenge for your fate!It's time for him to payback to you!This strategy is called "Counter-Backstab"!

----- Conclusion -----

I have played Risk for many years.So I have much experience of diplomacy and negotiation,that's why I can write such long article about the skill of negotiation.Don't look slightly to negotiation,it can turn your crippled position to the great power,and it can save you in the endangered situation.It is the only way of communication in diplomacy,turn it to be your effective tool as you can,you will discover its benefit if you do so.

Oh right,one more thing.Just don't forget to watch my new battle report --- The Song of Italy!Its first part:The Chaos of War will be coming soon at this month.

A very good article Alan. I like it that you back up your strategy with historical examples. Definitely the way to go. One amusing phrase was "Transferring Shock Wave" which I guess you coined it on the spot. I like the other one more though; "Counter-Backstab". It's so good it is almost self-explanatory.

Look forward to see the next one.
