Does anyone know why Africa is a good starting continent in 5 to 6 player

games, and N America is so bad?

Africa is great because it only has 3 borders but get 3 armies instead of one. It also has better expansion capability. Otherwise, you will end up stuck in Australia or south america wanting to expand to tough places.

Australia is good in 5 or 6 player game, only if you know that the opponents will play aggressively and that isolation would be to your advantage. The other problem is that if everyone in the game believes that the person starting from australia has an advantage, then you are already in trouble because they are going to fight you all the time.

If you are playing a six player game, you only get 20 soldiers to start. Africa only has six territories, N. America has nine. If you had every territory in N. America with one soldier on it, you would only be left with 11 soldiers to defend your borders, 11 divided between 3 borders isn't much of a defense. Where as if you are in Africa you get an extra soldier to each border. Plus, you only have to potentially kill 5 other people in africa at the most, depending on the order that you are placing, where as in N. america, you could have to fight as many as 8 other occupied territories.

This of course all depends on the order that you are placing, and where everyone else is placing.

North America is usually a tough spot to start out in 5-6 man games. The first continents to get locked down are almost always Africa, S. America, and Australia. If the African player and the S. American player agree to a truce at NA-BR, its difficult for other 4 players to capture either N. America or Europe without working closely together.

in 5-6 player games, Asia, Europe , and NA, are just not viable UNLESS you have allys on the borders who wont disrupt you.

SA and Africa and Aust all have their pros and cons and with luck and diplomacy skillz, either can be great.

I always saw Africa as capable of the same things as North America... They can both go for asia through one path, expand into south america, and attack Europe. I guess the only difference is that Europe is harder to defend Africa from, and North America is easily bottled up.
