Hey everybody, I'm a beginer at Risk (only played twice) and I'm already hooked. The only problem is my friend that I play with is the crafty vertran of the group, which means hes more than a little cocky. So heres my question, whats the best mind game to use against someone who has a big ego? I figure I may not be able to win by invading countries, but I may be able to invade his mind. Thanks for any help

Welcome to the site!

Well, what can I say. I guess you have come to the right place ;-)

As you may have noticed there are tons of articles on the site and of course you can use the book (Total Diplomacy) as well which will hopefully help you to play all sorts of mind games on your fellow veteran players.

Risk can be quite complex when it comes to psychology so I advice you to take it one step at a time. Master the tactical side of Risk quickly so you know how the game progresses. Then focus on diplomacy and borrow from experienced players. The forum is also full of case studies which can help you on this.

For your specific case, beating a player with ego, try to gather support from others and get them to gang up on him/her. Big egos usually fall for big challenges and may think they can beat everyone. But of course you cant beat everyone and you need to have friends. This is their greatest weakness and they fall for it every time. Their own ego and sense of superiority will bring them down. All you have to do it to guide them towards it.

I am sure others in the forum may help you on this too. Good luck.

I played the 'what you gonna do' strategy and it worked! He went out fisrt due to that and really bad rolls of the dice. Even though it was my second game and I only played 3 on 3, it still felt great to save Australia 'till the last. Thanks for the mind game help, his ego isn't as big now.

As a new poster to this forum (but not a new player to Risk) I am unsure if this tactic has ever been discussed before. I have used this many times agaisnt players with big egos and it has worked for most of them.

The tatic is very similar to a pincer move or "The Horns of the Bull" which is what the Zulus called it when they fought agaisnt the British. The basics are very easy to understand, and anyone should be able to pull it off. However it takes practics to execute the move perfectly.

If your friend has a big ego, by all means let him keep it. Show weakness. If your "empire" borders his show him weakness by creating a weak border with his. If your friend is so cocky, he won't be able to resist the chance to strike at you and will plow through your so called "weak" front.

The point is to cause him to overextend himself, by plunging into your empire especially your "weak" one you have hopefully done two things. First you have caused him to forget about advancing in other areas on the board, and second you have shown to other players how strong your cocky friend will be if he manages to eliminate you.

When it is your turn to retaliate, cut off his forces. Encircle his invading force and reclaim the bits and peices of your empire. If all has worked according to plan, you have cut off his invading force from the rest of his forces and have now placed a strong border between his empire and his invading force.

You can now eliminate his invading force and crush his valuable troops, while the other players hopefully now strike at your cocky friend. You have enclosed his force with the "horns" and now he has to face the bull. If all works well you can eliminate his "invasion force" while he cannot do anything about it, as he must defend himself on the fronts he forgot about.

It has worked in the past for me, and I hope it shall work for you. Good luck.

Good technique. I like the idea of chipping away until his empire comes down crumbling. Good name as well. Let's call it the Zulu Strategy. The key is to get others to attack his empire as well, which may not be that easy. Anyway, good one.
