In my group of friends I won 4 risk games in a row. I always use the same tactic of going for South America, then Africa and then North America and it rarely fails. I was the master of diplomacy and was siad to be like Grima Wormtongue but now I am in trouble. At the beginning of the game everyone tries to destroy me and even if I am giving helpful advice there is one player who always says I am lying and advises the oppositite. Even if I destroy him he still does it. it's very annoying.

I am also having a bad spell of bad luck. In my last two games I had 29 men fighting 20 to take over South America. I eneded up with one man and he had NINE. In the next game I had 26 figthing 15 and he had 10 left and me 1. I have a history of this happening but my luck never seems to even out.

This coupled with the fact everyone is against me ends up in me running across the board alone or being forced into detrimental alliances. I never have broken alliances in this game but this other player makes me out to be the slimiest thing since the Devil and others believe him. from the start of the game it is everyone against me. What should I do to counter my wretched bad luck and how to fight back against this biased propaganda.

It seems that you have ended up in a trickey situation. However, from what i understand, there is 'a key player' that causes more harm to you than any other and usually achieves this by propaganda. So far it seems, he had the upper hand. I think your best bet is to focus on this key player and make he/she go out of the game.

One way to break the cycle is to start the diplomatical process even before the game starts. Prepare other players and gang up againt him. Usually, the problem is that some players are very vocal and talk a lot. This way they tend to convince everyone of what they want to beleive. Sometimes if you mention this very fact to eveyone else, then they may realise what is happening. You need to be as vocal as he is. This can be difficult sometimes, but there isnt a better way to stop someone from talking than talking yourself.

On the other hand if you have a long history of winning, then people find it more difficult to trust you, becasue others persume you must be doing something 'nasty' to win.

Observe him and analyse what he does to you that gets you annoyed (and potentially kicked out of the game). Then do exactly the same thing to him and see if he can survive. This is a simple rule, but very effective.

Dude first of all you shouldnt attack someone til u have 1 guy left, if u outnumber him, attack til u lose and have equall power.

with my gang of friends i have won 6 in a row and they all fear me and 1 of them always trys to weaken me.... but you have to form alliances with people, and once ur like me and when u ask for an alliance everyone puts out their hand to shake mine, you wont have to worry about everyone ganging up on you cause they fear you.

this is a style i like to use while placing men, go for australia and try to get it completyly, then put one on kamchatka, one on siberia, and one on brazil***.

with australia you get the extra 2 men... its nice after a while and youl never lose it b/c no one feels like going down there for 2 men a turn....

with kamchatka, you build up protecting from NA and with siberia you stock up for a few turns

make an alliance with europe saying i wont bother you just let me do my thing and they will most likly not care b/c they have 2 other contents to worry about

then with siberia you sweep down the west side of asia to middles east, levae 5 -7 guys in each country behind you, to protect borders,

then with the guys you have protecting australia in indonesia, move north, attack siam, india, china, and maybe mongolia and japan...

then with ur little border patrol from the alaskans, attack yakutsk, irkkutsk and then mongolia + japan

with brazil over there.... you build up a bit, getting people in SA mad from those whole 2 men each turn, and africa mad from not being able to head into SA

now in about 4-7 turns you have asia andaustrilia, with those people will want to destroy you, but you should have good borders.... and if u still own that lil brazil, you just try to sneak around and ambush people

*** i just like brazil, you dont need to take it, but do take something on the west side of the board so u can ambush.

This might happen if you stop around after you won yelling about how wonderful you are.

but if you arent, then say its luck and lie. then they'll think youre innocent.

Interesting and amusing. Though I see one problem: Brazil. In my experience, you should only attempt to annoy a minimal number of people. The more you annoy, the more likely they will attack you, and that should always be avoided.

So when you put a large army in the middle of two other players and disrupt their plans, they start getting annoyed and if then they attemp to get rid of your forces together, then there is nothing that can stop them. In the end you end up loosing your placehold, the extra armies you invested in it and you may have also created two enemies for yourself. I'd say this is too much of a price to pay for a chance at ambushing someone on the other side of the planet which has no direct benefit for you in the near future.

This happened to me. I introduced the game a few years ago to my friends. We played a lot b/c it was so addicting but of course I always won. They nicknamed me Napolean. Then this one kid comes up and propagandizes everybody telling them to take me out while he holds back. After they flush me out he starts his reign of terror and demolishes everybody. They nicknamed him Hitler. After a while I started hating this player. So my strategy was to get the weakest player and make an alliance with him. Him take Africa and I take SA. Soon I expand to NA while giving him advice. This made him a very good player and he covered my back door well. I'm not sure but making alliances is the best way to solve this problem.

Note: The house style developed by players can greatly affect what strategy would work best when playing against them. Before reading my post it should be known that most games I play are of the nature where players constantly try to prevent others from achieving continental bonus, border alliances are usually very short-lived and players generally take turns "doing the responsible thing" by checking the strongest opponent, unless they do not feel threatened by the new developments.

I see another problem with the Brazil strategy. If a player has only one or two "colony" territories bordering my domains, I will almost certainly attempt to get rid of them before attacking anyone else. If I succeed there is no way he can attack me back - I have one less enemy to worry about and he is forced to attack my opponents instead (for the time being). In the beginning of the game this player would be primarily concerned with shoring up Australia so I don't think he would be able to defend my all-out attack on his Brazilian colony. If he is able to, then I am hosed because he can finance his war against me from all the wine he grows in Australia if he so chooses. This is precisely why I am so determined to cut off his tentacle. His presence in Brazil is a noose dangling above my neck.

Im not sure how to help you stop them from ganging up on you but it whould help to bottleneck them so you can only be attack one at a time also it is good to have only one or two people boardering you countrys untill you have a huge force to crush them

next game, go for Australia. using the bottleneck technique, try slowly expanding. This strategy will also show the other players that you, in fact, are not the strongest player (as you only have Australia, 2 points.) Convince the other players to attack the "superpower", the person who starts propaganda about you. Then, once they are out of the game, you should be fine.
