I love this game, but I've got a serious problem. I just started recently, but I play with the same two friends. Problem is, they're an engaged couple. They never come out and say they are allied, but it's pretty obvious. How do I overcome this obstacle?

Two people are easy to handle put your self so that you are only boarding one persons countrys so then they have to split their forces and when in doubt bottle neck them in astraila

Avoiding one of the two may not always be possible, given the fairly open board in a three-player game. You'll have to target one of the two consistently and go after that person every time, so it's always one half of the couple who wins after you're gone. Eventually that's got to make the losing half change their tune.

I recommend targeting the female half, so the male half always wins. The man is typically happy for the woman who always wins (especially in this situation where he's cleary not playing his best and can think privately to himself "that's why I lost"), so it wouldn't have the desired effect. But the woman ...

Of course you know this couple better than I do, so you'll have to decide which way will have the effect most in your favour.

Invite more people. Haha.

Try seizing continents like NA and Australia, which have comparatively few border territories. Then expand outwards from there. Constantly be on the defensive, but if it becomes necessary to prevent someone from getting a continent, don't hesitate to place everything in one territory and smash them.

As a rule, I only play Risk games with four or more people. So I'd never have this problem. Hah.

Take Australia and go isolationist. Don't do anything stupid. Explain to them that wiping you out first will let the other person win because they'll have just spent their resources killing you. Also, criticize them when they assume alliance. If they aren't guarding their borders, make a suggestion that one take away a bonus of the other. If you lay out how it is to their advantage to take advantage of the lax behavior of anyone in the game, most people will appreciate the advice. Because, really, Risk is more about politics than military strategy. It's boring without the propaganda.

Of course, make sure that they remember it's just a game. I've accidentally gotten my friends into serious arguments through my manipulations.

isolationist strategy. its still going to be near impossible, but try and make it so that only one of them can attack you at a time. try reading some of the psychological strategies listed in the articles section, otherwise find more people to play with. try and set them against each other as a last resort, as it can be risky and make yourself look desperate or weak.
