Guide to Playing Risk World Domination Online
What is this section about?

The purpose of this section is to provide independent reviews on computer and online Risk games. As always, each computer game has its pros and cons. Each game tries to accomodate certain needs and as a result it is slightly biased on certain features.

You as a player, may find one incredibly enjoyable, while you may not care about a feature provided by another game. Over the years, online Risk games have evolved dramatically. In addition, each online game has tried to be slightly different from the original classic Risk (perhaps for legal reasons). This has led to a wide range of variations and styles that is difficult to comprehend before getting engaged in the game itself.

As Risk fans, we are grateful that developers are continuing their efforts on enhancing these games, so that we can have yet another game and enjoy the trill of winning.

The purpose:
Hence, this section serves two purposes:
  1. Discovery of new online Risk games as they are introduced into the market.
  2. Evaluation of these games based on their functionality, popularity, style of play, originality and so on.
A number of links and reviews are provided below for the current popular games. These reviews are independent of the software publishers.

What you can do?
You, as a Risk fan, are invited to comment and review the online Risk games listed here. In particular those who are frequent users of these games are welcome to provide their insight.

Submit links for online Risk Games
In addition you can also submit new links on Risk games and your reviews. Upon approval, the review will be added to the site for the community's consideration.

Conquer Club Screen Shot

Review: The game is played inside a browser. There are a number of tournaments and players are ranked accordingly. The game interface mainly consists of combo boxes and buttons in a browser to select where you want to attack from and where you want to attack to. Turn times can be as long as a day. Hence the games are played very slowly.

RSS feeds are available to facilitate game play. This is handy specially when you have to make a single move every day. Just visit your favourite RSS reader and follow the link to make your move when your turn comes.

It is possible to have team games. There are over 25 alternative maps at the time of writing.

The user interface is where all the activity takes place and that its greatest weakness. The map is not very readable and is difficult to get a feel of the distribution of armies by a single glance. There are other solutions such as Grand Strategy which have done a much better job. You get a number of selection boxes for attack and fortification. However. there are no stats to show you how many armies or territories each player has and you are forced to count it yourself. When I collect card, I like to know how many armies would I get if I cash and also how many armies others get if they cash their. Considering that each game, even within the same implementation, can have different rules, I consider it critical to let the player know what they will get. Again, the user interface doesn't show anything related to this, not even the precise rule it is use to calculate the next card.

If you can get past the user interface issue, the game can become quite addictive and you want to play it all the time. The long turn time, combined with RSS means that you will be making your move when you read news everyday and it quickly becomes a habit.

The game is free to play, though you can pay with a yearly paid subscription to get all of the features.

Actually, they've fixed a lot of this. They currently have card counters, and multiple greasemonkey (usable only on Firefox) add-ons. You may also set up RT (real time) games in the forums and live chat, and they are currently working on speed games so you can start one without going onto the forums.

We also have a great forum community. Unfortunately, the moderators tend to be on the immature side and power abusers. But, if there is something wrong (bad feedback, inappropriate posts, ect.) they will fix it.

Anyways, I would like this review updated, and I would also highly recommend this site, and buying a premium. It costs a mere $20 a year, and you get unlimited games.

Conquer Club is constantly updating and upgrading. There is now a card counter, which was always available through a plug-in. The plug-in will also show number of armies and a strength factor for each opponent.

Quicker "real-time" games can also be arranged for those who can't wait long to take a turn through the live chat or forum.

Conquer Club also boasts a vibrant online community, where addicts can talk about strategy, host or join tournaments, or just chat. Also, the selection of unique and fun maps to play on is second to none.

All features except for the passwording of private games are available to all users, whether paying or not.

I think that this review is nowhere close. The maps are very readable, and if you spent time working on the maps like many of our users, you would see that putting in a map for gameplay takes time and effort. A group of cartographers help make a map look better and fix it up a LOT for gameplay.

Also, when you say that you can get a yearly subscription, you make it sound like it is a lot more than it actually is. For $20 ONLY you can play unlimited games.

There are constant updates, so everything that was once bad is now new and improved. This article seems very biased against CC.

blitzaholic   By blitzaholic @ Sunday, June 3, 2007 4:05 AM
well let me just say that i am the best ever!
just look at my points. points points points. i have so many points i am the king of points. my name is blitz, i am a single 32 year old male and live at home with my parents. i collect welfare which is a good thing because this allows me to play risk all day and collect points. i only leave the house about twice a year (for personal reasons). and besides you cant collect points outside.
i love risk. if i could marry risk i would.

first of the poster above "WICKED" works for CC.
but she was right about the the staff being power hungry and immature. they cancel games and suspend people and cancel there accounts that they payed for, even if these people didn't break any off the site rules. and after they punish PAYING customers in such a way they to not even send them an email or communicate with them in any way.
this site is garbage and you have to wait up to 5 days for 1 tun in a game. they have 24 hours for each person to take a turn and most people sign up and never play. and they don't get kicked out for 3 turns of no play. there servers are so and are constantly going down. 98% of good player only create private games and play with each other so no new comers are welcome!
and they also advertise this site and tell there members to vote for conquerclub on these polls quite often.

96% of all games are doubles or triples which means you need to find a partner to play. this is because of there rediculas point system they stole from chess that is not relavent to risk in any way. and the only way to abuse it and not lose points is to play deadbeats in triples games.

and alot of the members are pretty sure they sell your email adresses because most members complain about getting loads of JUNK mail shortly after they join.
they also have "scripts" you have to download from random people to play the game properly and some of these have had viruses.

so playing there is a HUGE gamble and i dont recommend.
but come find me online and GIMMY YOUR POINTS

wicked   By wicked @ Sunday, June 3, 2007 10:59 AM
They guy above me is lying. They do not cancel games, there are plenty of single games, and the real blitzaholic can spell way better than that. None of the plug-ins have viruses, and you do not need them to play the game. They simply enhance the gaming experience. Please check out the site, as it is a great place to play RISK.

I believe 5 or 6 of my games were cancelled because I was playing with somebody who was supposedly losing on purpose, even though we were winning the games.
I had to leave the site because the good players are too concerned about their points, this just takes the fun right out. They also treated some members extremely unfairly by banning his account (which had $40 invested in it) for reasons that were never specified in the rules & were actually commented as not agaisnt the rules later.
"Suiciding is certainly frowned upon but not explicitly illegal. If you are afraid it will continue I would add Sammy to your ignore list and then he won't be able to join your games." Sully (Multi-Hunter)
So enough about the corruption that goes on in the CC community, lets get to the actual gameplay. The site fails to provide you with adequate statistics as talked about in the above paragraph, however there are extensions you can download to fix this problem. But as blitz aholic also says in the above, many of them carry viruses. If you know me, you would know that I am paranoid about getting viruses & I spend a lot of money on my virus protection. I recently purchased a new laptop so I could have a computer to carry around when I got to college. It was a computer I barely ever used: seeing as I am a desktop guy; however I used it to take my turns on CC while I was on vacation. While I was on vacation I downloaded one of the extensions so I could tell how many armies & cards other people had. A week later my computer crashed because I got some kind of trojan. I figured I got it from downloading the extension since I hadn't used my computer for anything else. The site also fails to deliver what people call real-time games. If one person ditches your game, you will have to wait to wait days to finish the game which can be extremely frustrating, if someone ditches your game, they should automatically lose. The only reason I can think of this not being fixed is either the man running the site is extremely lazy, or he just wants you to pay so you can play over 4 games. Conquer Club is a fun place to play, but nothing beats playing a simple board game with your buddies.
It may seem like I made everybody on CC look unfair & corrupt, however that is not the case. There are actually people who are friendly enough to buy other people premium accounts & these people are a pleasure to play with. However the majority of CC members are extremely rude (even the moderators such as wicked) & the owner of the site is irresponsible (accidentally deletes games because he is getting his back rubbed).

I think people need to stop complaining about the review. If other very similar games (Grand Strategy, Landgrab) offer necessary features without the use of a plug in then I think it’s fair to make comments about what CC is missing. By needing plug-ins for most of the basic information the game is putting new players at a HUGE disadvantage to the members who have been around for awhile and are aware of the plug-ins.

This must be quite an old review nearly all the features mentioned as missing have since been added. Conquer club does also include a forum where you can make suggestions for other new features which is read regularly.

Only problem with CC are that some of the maps are a bit difficult to read and understand until you get used to them. Apart from that Conquer Club is definitely the best on line risk site by miles.

CQ is still ran by frauds. Although my roommate and I share a computer, which they allow, they banned us for having a 'multiple account'. Even after several requests, they refused to come with proof, as they had not one shred of evidence. They simply use this rule to enforce people to buy a premium account, which neither of us did, as these ‘people’ they hide behind their fake names, clearly are untrustworthy.

Between the suiciders ,online gangs and immature kids and morons playing it, you do get some great games. I feel they should do more for their loyal customers too. Could be awesome , not currently

Your article was a good read, and I like the way you write. By the way, let me recommend you an ainol novo7 as an awesome X-mas gift. Hope you'll like it.

Dukasaur   By Dukasaur @ Tuesday, January 14, 2014 3:09 AM
Conquer Club has come a long way since the above review was written. At that time, there were 25 maps -- today there are 225! Similarly, other options have been added. There are dozens of rule variations supported, and some combinations of maps and rule variations can give you a very sophisticated wargame experience. Games now accept as many as 12 players, including teams. At the other end of the spectrum, there are bots (AI opponents) for those who lack the patience to wait for a human opponent. All in all, a tremendous number of options to choose from.

cocomutt4ever   By cocomutt4ever @ Sunday, May 11, 2014 4:29 AM has really improved over the last year or so. Like Dukasaur said above, there are now 225+ maps, bot games, more tournaments, special events for holidays, and a very active community. AS far as online RISK or strategy games go, is an excellent value at $25 for the whole year to become a member (free play is also available).
